Shingled Roofs, Shingle Roof Repairs: Residential, Commercial

Need a new roof or replacement roof? But you are on a budget? For re-roofing on a budget, but still taking pride in your home's weather protection and beauty, shingled roofs provide the best of both worlds-weather protection and "pocketbook" protection.

While maintaining an attractive look and weather tightness of your home, asphalt composition shingle roofs may be your easiest answer.

While not as durable and long-lasting as some of the other premium roofing materials, asphalt shingles can provide enough protection against the weather elements, while still displaying style, beauty and aesthetic appeal-all for a fraction of the cost.

Shingle Roof Questions:

Why Do I Need A Felt Layer Under The Shingles?

The asphalt felt layer under the shingles provides several functions;

  • The felt is water resistant, and acts as a secondary protection against wind driven rain.
  • Felt protects the shingles from resins of roof decking materials.
  • Felt is a required component in meeting Class A or Class C fire ratings.

How Long Do Asphalt Shingles Last?

The lifespan of asphalt shingles depends heavily upon the grade of the shingle and the environment. They are available in grades that last for anywhere between 20-50 years and beyond. However, hot climates (such as our Utah climate) tend to prematurely damage asphalt shingles.

The worst climate conditions for shingled roofs are when temperatures reach 100 degrees during the daytime, and then drop to below 50 degrees at night. (Thankfully, those days rarely occur in Utah.)

Asphalt shingles don’t have the time to properly expand and contract, and cracks begin to develop in the material.

Still, during the snowy, cold, icy Utah winters, water can get into the cracks, and expand as it freezes. This causes the already existing cracks to become even bigger. Asphalt shingles thus do best in climates that have fairly steady temperatures - not too cold in the winter and not too hot in the summer.

However, because they are economical and affordable, asphalt shingles are the most common roofing material by both homeowners and contractors.
